Authentic music to me
translates to lyrics, rhythm and melody being performed as close to the
original as humanly possible. Koops
speaks about “connecting
the story of a piece of music to students' own experiences and encouraging
students to create new music in the style of music being studied help
facilitate meaningful experiences for students.” This has been the practice in
my classroom since I began teaching. In my opinion, having the knowledge of the
piece’s background and/or cultural relativity, will paint the picture you would
like to portray for the audience.
This video “was
a culmination of a 6 year cultural exchange project between Indigenous and
Non-Indigenous artists from the Philippines and Central West NSW (Wiradjuri
Country), Australia.” It features authentic cultural music that is combined
with modern rhythms at about the 1:35 mark. The original melody is merged with drum
rhythms and high school students’ vocal offerings. The combination creates a
different sound on the same melody, but the dances and vocals in the beginning of the video show the authenticity to the culture.
Before I saw your blog post I had never heard of Cordillera music, and it was really interesting to see how the artists combined the old with the modern. I agree with Koops and you that by connecting music to student's experiences and encouraging them to create music in the style being studied helps to give the students meaningful experiences. I'm sure the students who participated in this project have great memories of the collaboration and that some are even interested in preserving the Cordillera music from the Filipino culture. Excellent post!
